Education conflict

Charges and counter-charges surrounding the proposed closing of the Chicago Public Schools exemplify the kind of win-lose conflict that this city needs to move beyond.

We look to the editors of the Chicago Tribune to rise above being a party in this flight to being leaders in bringing some creative thinking to this problem ("Racist? No; School closings debate threatens to divide the city," Editorial, April 9).

The issues in this conflict go beyond personal power struggles between the mayor and union leaders. This fight is not just about race relations, school closings, quality education, safer neighborhoods, jobs, abandoned buildings, struggling communities, charter schools, the future of public education or the decision-making process itself. It is about all of these issues and more. We can't address these issues by simply polarizing the city around whether to close schools or not.

It's time for some creative thinking from our leaders that goes beyond pitting powerful forces against each other with children being caught in the crossfire.

It's time for some imaginative thinking that can bring together economic resources, community participants, editorial leadership and political will power.

It's time for the Chicago Tribune to call for the process of third-party mediation to bring together all the parties to establish some common goals and the means to accomplish them.

This should not be the end of negotiations. This should be just the beginning.

O texto acima é uma carta ao editor do jornal sobre um assunto local. Meu interesse é particular posto que é a publicação de uma professora amiga minha. É um problema pontual que queiram acabar com as escolas públicas num país onde encontram-se altares em louvor ao dinheiro e seu poder. Nada contra a deificação do dinheiro, cada qual louva que lhe é louvável. O motivo de eu republicar a carta acima é o fato de eu não ter tido acesso a este conteúdo não fossem as máscaras, camuflagens e simulacros da web. 

Aproveito pra relembrar o estimado Anonymouse. Um dos poucos baluartes que representam verdadeiramente o espírito da nossa Era, a Era Digital, a Era da Informação. Agora, com a emergência de aprovação do tal 'Marco Civil' da Internet no Brasil, precisamos tomar cuidado com os excessos de problemas que informam estarem enfrentando e o que está escrito na bandeira a favor dos usuários. Lembro que 'usuário' não é sinônimo de 'consumidor', nem muito menos, de 'indivíduo'. O argumento vale para a vida digital, para a vida natural e, também, para a vida liminar (marginal).
